When asked to put Czech Republic in two words, I thought “it’s been done
already”, but it seems the country’s name doesn’t count. So, another
two words: Karel Poborsky. He doesn’t play anymore, but he was a
legendary right winger, one of the best players in the remarkable Euro
1996 Czech team, which reached the finals, losing to Germany. I could
have chosen Pavel Nedved, but Poborsky has later played for Benfica, and
that means a lot to me. Czechs have at least half a title of European
Champions, since Czechoslovakia won the 1976 cup, at Yugoslavia, beating
West Germany at the finals. It was a whole different continent back
then, as you can see. And this final became historic thanks to another
two words: AntonĂn Panenka, the man of the exquisite touch, the first to
turn a penalty kick into poetry. And he scored.
